General information

The purpose of the Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) is to stimulate interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering, and to promote graduate studies. If you'd like to gain experience in academic research, these scholarships can help you financially. What's more, these scholarships can become a considerable asset if you wish to pursue graduate studies and apply for federal and provincial scholarship competitions.

General modality:
- Start date of the internship: January, May or September. If your internship starts in January, you must apply no later than December 1;
- Minimum amount: $7,500, including $6,000 from NSERC and $1,500 from the internship supervisor;
- Duration of the internship: 14 to16 consecutive weeks full time during one semester;
- NSERC internships completed in whole or in part remotely are accepted;
- The internship supervisor must be a professor or a faculty lecturer at HEC Montréal. The supervisor must be conducting a research project on a subject that falls within one of the fields supported by NSERC;

Evaluation

The following criterion will be used to evaluate application files:
  • Quality of the training offered during the internship: 40%
  • Good academic results: 40%
  • Research potential of the candidate: 20%

Application

How to submit your application

- You must find a professor willing to take you on as an intern and agree to pay you a minimum of $1,500. This amount will be added to the $6,000 NSERC scholarship.
- When you have an agreement with a professor, you must complete Part I of Form 202 from the Online system, then send your professor the reference number to complete Part II and submit it.
Application must include

  2. Copy of all your official university transcripts
  3. Official university grading system (s)
If the application is not submitted as required, it will be considered incomplete and could be rejected without notice.
Note
- You must be enrolled in a bachelor's program at an eligible university during the competition term.
- You must be working full-time on eligible research and development activities in your field of research for the duration of your scholarship.

- Incomplete applications will not be considered. Transcripts must be complete and official, which includes grading systems.
